The Sensing team is responsible for the hardware that embodies the “senses” of Tesla vehicles. Our goal is to reliably give the vehicle as much information about its interior & exterior environments as possible with high accuracy. We are seeking a sensor hardware design engineer that will be responsible for designing sensors that support HVAC, Safety, Autopilot, Chassis and other subsystems of the vehicle. As a Sensor Hardware Design Engineer on this team, you will be responsible for overall performance of the sensing system and its features at any point in the product life cycle, serve as the owner of a given sensing system to address any issues discovered from development through deployment, understand and debug hardware and software interactions from prototyping through product launch, and manage priorities and support a host of projects simultaneously.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Drive the design and execution of sensing subsystems through the following:
Specification generation – distill sensor product requirements into constraints and
actionable engineering systems design discussions
Collaboration – host cross-functional sensor design discussions with electrical,
software, supply chain, manufacturing, thermal, and mechanical design teams
Architecture definition – translate sensor design discussions into design documents
in the form of system block diagrams, functional and performance requirements
Schematic design – use EDA tools to define the electrical components and their
connectivity
PCB Layout – supervise the generation of board design files through all design
phases
Support BOM definition – work with the supply chain team to ensure components will
meet performance, cost & manufacturing requirements
Prototyping – support early sensor prototype development to de-risk new
technologies
Validation – generate a test plan that includes milestones that focus on de-risking
product and/or feature deployment and align with the program timeline
Characterization – ensure the hardware meets required design criteria across a host
of environments and regulations while collaborating with the reliability, test and
homologation teams
REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degrees in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering,
Mechatronics or related field.
Ability to tackle problems and reason using a first principles approach
Experience with circuit board design (Altium preferred) involving specification, architecture,
design, simulation, prototype, schematic, layout supervision, validation, and manufacturing
Strong understanding of analog & digital circuits (MOSFETs, op-amps, linear & switching
regulators, microcontrollers, digital protocols like SPI & I2C)
Experience with PCB component selection
Exceptional organization and communication skills (both written and verbal)
Experience in MATLAB, Python, C/C++ or equivalent tools for modeling and analysis
Proficient in data visualization and statistical analysis
Understanding of hardware development process
Proficiency with lab equipment (including oscilloscopes, signal generators, power supplies) Experience with sensor design & characterization is preferred
Experience with CAN tools such as Vector CANape is preferred
Experience with version control tools such as Git, SVN or equivalents is preferred
Experience in failure analysis, HARAs, and fault trees is preferred
Familiarity with JIRA or similar task/feature tracking systems is preferred
Experience with high volume manufacturing is preferred
Experience with embedded systems is preferred
