Microsoft is looking for a Portfolio Analyst to join the Renewable Energy & Risk Team within the Cloud Operations + Innovation Organization. This position will be responsible for supporting the Renewable Energy Origination, Asset Management and Risk teams with the ongoing management of a large portfolio of renewable energy contracts. This role will provide the candidate a unique opportunity to join a high impact team and gain a wide range of exposure to global energy markets.

Responsibilities

Develop new and/or improve existing asset management / risk reporting tools and processes to provide accurate and timely information to key stakeholders, including working with internal engineering and external vendors to translate business needs into corresponding data requirements, and build out portfolio data architecture and platform to meet team objectives.

Work with energy markets and renewables teams to collect and process data at scale and improve modeling of existing contractual positions globally.

Create detailed scenario analyses to inform both retail and renewable energy procurement decisions with a target to reduce spend at risk across regional and global portfolios.

Track budget variances, run root cause analyses, and present consolidated outputs and learnings to renewable and risk team leads.

Perform regular backcasts to assess accuracy of contractual modeling and market assumptions to continually calibrate risk models.

Support Renewable Energy Origination team with deal approval process including creation of proforma documentation for finance approvals and new vendor onboarding.

Support the Asset Management team to drive vendor invoicing consistency and implement tools for independent verification to ensure accurate invoices and timely payments.

Provide ad-hoc support for contract negotiations with actionable feedback on portfolio risks and opportunities.

Qualifications

Required:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Supply Chain, Data Analytics, Business, Finance or related field AND 2+ years experience (including internships) in Data Science/Analytics, Finance, Project Management, Supply Chain, and/or Operations

OR equivalent experience.

Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in finance, actuarial sciences, computer science, engineering disciplines, business analytics, or equivalent practical experience.

2+ years of experience in data science or analytics, particularly data exploration, visualization and performing quantitative analysis, preferably in relation to energy markets or spend at risk analysis

Broad understanding of the electricity industry, with specific focus on the mechanics of wholesale power markets and energy agreements.

Proven ability to perform in ambiguous environments and thrive in a dynamic work environment.

Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, especially the ability to explain complex issues clearly and concisely.

Growth mindset with problem-solving skills.

Post-graduate degree in relevant a field is a plus, though experience in consulting and power/energy industries may substitute for relevant graduate education

Proficiency in Python, R, or other interpreted programming language and/or data-querying skills such as SQL

Experience with international power markets & understanding of fundamental economic theory and forward price forecasting.

Familiarity with statistical methods and experience performing quantitative analysis.

Knowledge of database management process and schema, ETL processes, and reporting tools.

Understanding of renewable energy contracts and valuation.

Familiarity with any of the following: Git, Shiny, Kusto, PowerBI.

Sourcing and Category Management IC3 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $72,800 – $144,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $95,100 – $157,900 per year.

Microsoft has different base pay ranges for different work locations within the United States, which allows us to pay employees competitively and consistently in different geographic markets (see below). The range above reflects the potential base pay across the U.S. for this role (except as noted below); the applicable base pay range will depend on what ultimately is determined to be the candidate’s primary work location. Individual base pay depends on various factors, in addition to primary work location, such as complexity and responsibility of role, job duties/requirements, and relevant experience and skills. Base pay ranges are reviewed and typically updated each year. Offers are made within the base pay range applicable at the time.

At Microsoft certain roles are eligible for additional rewards, including merit increases, annual bonus and stock. These awards are allocated based on individual performance. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee’s role.
