Amazon Web Services (AWS) is looking for a Principal Developer Advocate to join the Amazon Aurora team. Amazon Aurora is a MySQL and PostgreSQL-compatible, relational database engine that combines the speed and availability of high-end commercial databases with the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of open source databases. Aurora also manages all the work needed to set up, operate, and scale a database, from provisioning capacity and installing software to monitoring and backing up the cluster, to applying patches and upgrades. By automating these labor-intensive tasks, Amazon Aurora enables customers to spend their time focusing on their data and business insights, rather than on procuring and managing infrastructure.
Amazon Aurora Developer Advocates (DAs) work to represent our customers from within the Amazon Aurora product team during all phases of product development. We leverage our hands-on technical experience and data we gather through our relationships with our customers to influence the product roadmap. We work alongside Product Managers and engineering teams to help design, build, and launch the best features possible to address our customers’ biggest challenges.
We work to identify and anticipate customer challenges, and solve them within the context of Amazon Aurora. DAs engage as individuals directly with our technical customer community, and we pride ourselves on our ability to communicate complex technical content with simplicity and honesty.
As a Principal Developer Advocate in the Amazon Aurora team, you will work to earn trust with our customers through your technical leadership and expertise. This is a high-impact role that’s well-suited to someone with domain-specific technical experience that enjoys sharing what they have learned in order to help customers solve their technical issues and overcome any challenges they face. Your primary focus will be engaging with and bringing feedback back to the team from our Open Source community. Amazon Aurora is not only built on open source technology but is giving back to the open source community, through projects such as Babelfish (https://aws.amazon.com/rds/aurora/babelfish/).
You will produce technical content to help our customers learn about new features, and guide their plans for adoption and growth. You’ll offer opinionated and timely guidance on how to make the most of the features and functions of Amazon Aurora, and in particular engage with the open source community for open sourced products from the Amazon Aurora team. This content includes blog posts, technical presentations, workshops, and video content. You will work with open source customers, developers, and the broader open source community to create sample code and demo applications to help communicate complex ideas and scenarios, and engage directly with the community.
In this role, you will spend time to learn and experiment on your customers’ behalf. This experience will inform your influence on the product roadmap. You will work alongside product managers and engineering teams to define, design, test, and launch new features. You will identify gaps in our products and documentation, and have direct impact on addressing those gaps. You will work with marketers to identify areas to engage the community, amplify the materials and resources you create, and identify areas of improvement in our public content for Amazon Aurora.

Amazon’s culture of inclusion is reinforced within our 14 Leadership Principles, which remind team members to seek diverse perspectives, learn and be curious, and earn trust.
Work/Life Balance
Our team puts a high value on work-life balance. It isn’t about how many hours you spend at home or at work; it’s about the flow you establish that brings energy to both parts of your life. We believe striking the right balance between your personal and professional life is critical to life-long happiness and fulfillment. We offer flexibility in working hours and encourage you to find your own balance between your work and personal lives.
This position may involve on-call responsibilities, typically for one week every two months. We don’t like getting paged in the middle of the night or on the weekend, so we work to ensure that our systems are fault tolerant. When we do get paged, we work together to resolve the root cause so that we don’t get paged for the same issue twice.
Mentorship & Career Growth
Our team is dedicated to supporting new members. We have a broad mix of experience levels and tenures, and we’re building an environment that celebrates knowledge sharing and mentorship. Our senior members enjoy one-on-one mentoring and thorough, but kind, code reviews. We care about your career growth and strive to assign projects based on what will help each team member develop into a better-rounded engineer and enable them to take on more complex tasks in the future.
