Google Hiring for Cryogenic Systems Mechanical Design Hardware Engineer, Quantum AI at Goleta, CA Full Time
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Physics or equivalent practical experience.
- Software experience including computer-aided design (CAD) software (e.g. OnShape), with CAM, PDM, BOM handling.
- Experience with simulation for thermal and structural analysis tools (e.g., COMSOL, ANSYS).
- Experience working with vendors and assist assembly technicians .
Preferred qualifications:
- PhD or Master’s degree in Engineering/Physics, with industrial experience in aerospace.
- Experience with design/manufacture of gas-gap heat switches, heat pipes, mechanical heat switches, or similar mechanisms.
- Experience with design/assembly of scientific instrumentation into cryogenic and high-vacuum apparatus (e.g. integrating microwave and RF components).
- Experience with design, manufacture, and/or integration of refrigerators (e.g.,GM, pulse tube, 3He-4He dilution).
- Experience with high-vacuum valves and pumps.
- Knowledgeable of material properties relevant to cryogenic and high-vacuum design, with proficiency in writing and maintaining clear documentation and test plans.

The Quantum team’s mission is to make useful quantum computing tools available to the world to enable humankind to solve problems that would otherwise be impossible. Google AI Quantum is building novel systems that can leverage quantum mechanics to outperform the world’s largest computers at certain classes of problems.
You will work with scientists and hardware engineers and outside vendors on a temperature system for the next generation superconducting qubit based quantum computers.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with scientists and hardware engineers to derive design choices from system requirements, translate these design ideas into manufacturable CAD models, and work with manufacturers to ensure manufacturability.
- Use CAD and simulation software to analyze designs for thermal/mechanical performance at (ultra-) low temperatures.
- Design chassis and mechanical mating interfaces to cryogenic experiment components (e.g., cabling harnesses, device/electronics packaging) and analyze for thermal performance.
- Maintain drawings, full-system models, Bill of materials (BOMs) for cryogenic assemblies, and related documentation.
- Assist technical personnel with assembly procedures, including troubleshooting, streamlining, and documenting procedures for both prototypes and serially produced products.
