Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 4 years of experience as a designer in a related technical field working on shippable products
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience in both physical and screen-based interface design
- Experience with hardware design/prototyping techniques and tools (e.g., motion graphics, animation, 3D design), and human-centered design methodology
- Experience in hardware interaction logic design
- Experience working with Industrial Design and Product Design teams
- Experience partnering with UX research teams to maximize research and design impact
About the job
In this role, you will be working on LEDs, touch affordances, buttons, gestures, haptics, and more. You will design physical interactions for the entire portfolio of Nest’s hardware products for the home (e.g., speakers, displays, cameras, security, safety, HVAC, entertainment, WiFi).
You will define how people experience and use our products through physical interfaces. You will articulate a vision for a product’s physical interface, provide specifications for its implementation, and lead cross-team collaboration to make that vision a tangible reality for our customers. You will craft a product experience in an environment where requirements and constraints evolve and are defined over many design iterations.

Responsibilities
- Lead the conceptualization, design, and specification of physical user interfaces for products, working in collaboration with Industrial Design (ID), Product Design (PD), Human Factors, UX Research, and embedded software teams
- Develop interactive prototypes of proposed physical interface concepts for testing, and conduct lab studies to test and validate proposed product designs against usability and quality standards
- Define, document, and maintain visual language and quality standards for physical products (i.e., color vocabulary, LED animations, iconography, etc.)
- Work with calibration experts to define ideal color goals for LEDs and ranges of acceptability for products in production; provide comprehensive UX quality control in assessing prototypes and final production units against quality standards
- Lead fellow designers in the effective design, specification, and implementation of physical user interface
