About the job
Our mission on the Android Automotive team is to create a better driving experience by embedding Android into cars as the in-vehicle infotainment operating system. There is an opportunity to innovate on a surface that has not had much attention until recently. We are working closely with major automotive manufacturers, who are highly motivated to make this happen. Recently we launched the first car using Android Automotive OS.
Like Google’s own ambitions, the work of a Software Engineer (SWE) goes way beyond just Search. In this role, you will have the technical expertise to take on and provide technical leadership to major projects, and also manage a team of engineers. You will optimize your own code, and make sure engineers are able to optimize theirs.
As an Engineering Manager, you will manage your project goals, contribute to product strategy, and help develop your team. SWE teams work all across the company, in areas such as operating systems, energy optimal system design, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, networking, security, virtualization, and user interfaces. Operating with scale and speed, our exceptional software engineers are just getting started, and as a manager, you will guide the way.
Automotive industry executives say there will be more change in their business in the next 5 years than they have seen in the last 50 years.
The Android Auto team collaborate with vehicle manufacturers to develop and deliver on this massive opportunity, building on a proven embedded platform to create a leading Assistant-powered, navigation, entertainment, and communication vehicle system, which will be delivered to specialized people-moving devices.
Responsibilities
Design, guide, and vet systems designs within the scope of the broader area, and write product or system development code to solve ambiguous problems.
Review code developed by other engineers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).
Develop edge to cloud systems, active and energy optimal systems, monitoring tools and CI/CD to scale operating system deployments.
Contribute to existing documentation or educational content and adapt content based on product/program updates and user feedback.
Triage product or system issues and debug/track/resolve by analyzing the sources of issues and the impact on hardware, network, or service operations and quality.
