About the job
The Mobile Product Operations team within our Devices and Services organization is responsible for providing high-quality and helpful consumer products including mobile and wearable products. As a Failure Analysis (FA) Engineer, you’ll evaluate the product designs and create the processes, tools, and procedures to continuously improve customer experience by improving product quality. You will work very closely with Product Design, System Engineering, Tech Engineering, Product Operations, Reverse Logistics, Customer Support, and Android teams, all working together to unblock issues and maintain high product quality standards. Your work ensures the various pieces of Google’s operations fit together perfectly while providing a great customer experience.
You will be a key player in the complete product lifecycle. You will provide insight to the design team for design risks by performing tear-downs of prototype devices, based on lessons learned. You will perform failure analysis of development units and field returns, evaluating electrical, thermal, and mechanical characteristics of integrated circuits, components, sub-components and systems. You will need to recognize customer induced damage and be comfortable analyzing all potential failure modes, including issues related to packaging/logistics, software/firmware, and mechanical or electrical issues.
You will work together with manufacturing partners and cross-functional engineering teams to identify the root cause of failure and recommend/implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence of problems. You will develop procedures and automation to support high volume field failure analysis.
Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. Whether finding new ways to capture and sense the world around us, advancing form factors, or improving interaction methods, the Devices & Services team is making people’s lives better through technology.
Responsibilities
Identify, investigate, and minimize failures experienced by customers.
Reproduce and analyze field failures to understand failure mechanism and root cause.
Ensure materials and failure analysis capabilities are in place to support whole device triage (level 1), module level (level 2), and isolation to a component level (level 3).
Work with cross-functional teams to take field failures from root cause identification through to corrective action.
Understand factory assembly and test processes and work on improving any gaps, based on field returns, that could result in customer failures.
