Responsibilities
To support these efforts, Microsoft is hiring a Director of Sustainability Initiatives. This position will manage key Microsoft related sustainability initiatives; identify and track key global sustainability policy developments; engage with external sustainability organizations and stakeholders, including the UN and other international organizations, coordinate across diverse CELA and Microsoft business groups to develop sustainability policy positions, and promote global positions and campaigns in furtherance of Microsoft’s operational and sustainability commitments around carbon, ecosystems, waste, and water. The Director will also support Microsoft’s participation in sustainability related industry associations and coalitions and collaborate with corporate affairs colleagues globally to drive effective engagement and communicate Microsoft’s global policy positions clearly and effectively to internal and external audiences.
The policy positions will be inclusive of Microsoft’s sustainability focus areas of carbon, water, waste, and ecosystems, led by enabling Microsoft to meet its sustainability commitments, responsive to Microsoft’s business needs, and aligned with ensuring an even, equitable global policy landscape that delivers both environmental and societal benefits.
A successful candidate will be inventive, comfortable working in a quick-turn, deadline-driven, matrixed, international environment, and adept at managing multiple projects and assignments simultaneously. You must be flexible, able to multi-task, demonstrate strong attention to detail, meet deadlines, and be comfortable working independently within ambiguous situations.
Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree AND 7+ years experience in corporate social responsibility, philanthropies, corporate affairs, or related area
OR 10+ years experience in corporate social responsibility, philanthropies, corporate affairs, or related area.
5+ years of experience coordinating collaborative teams to design, build, evaluate, support, and continuously improve national or global environmental policy.
Additional or Preferred Qualifications
12+ years experience in corporate social responsibility, philanthropies, corporate affairs, or related area.In-house counsel experience.
3+ years experience managing a corporate social responsibility or related program.
3+ years experience working in or with a large, matrixed organization.
Background in sustainability, environmental science, or other natural sciences.
Experience working in national government or international organization on environmental issues.
Attention to detail, strong strategic execution.
Success collaborating across multiple teams and levels and track record of coalition building .
Proven track record in project and business management.
Experience leading and executing projects in a complex organizational environment and work on several diverse projects simultaneously.
Strong analytical, financial acumen and communication skills with the ability to influence across non-direct reporting teams.
Ability to translate ideas into clear, high impact communications.
Ability to excel in an ambiguous environment.
Ability to represent the Company effectively in a variety of public settings.
Experience managing outside resources, including consultants, on legislative or public policy-related initiatives.
