LENS is an integral part of the Customer Security and Trust (CST) organization within Corporate, External and Legal Affairs (CELA). The CST organization is comprised of multiple teams responsible for Microsoft’s public policy and compliance practices relating to cybersecurity, cybercrime, critical infrastructure protection, security engineering, online safety, and lawful access. As part of CST, the LENS team is responsible for balancing public safety and global trust in Microsoft through principled advocacy, and compliance with government demands that respect the rule of law and protect our customers’ privacy. LENS provides this support for Microsoft’s online services such as Outlook & Hotmail.com, OneDrive, Xbox Live, Skype, etc.
Within the global LENS team, the US-based team reviews and responds to criminal and civil legal demands in compliance with US, European, and international law. Specialists are responsible for ensuring that these legal demands are processed both expeditiously and accurately. This requires a keen eye for detail, superior judgement, and effective multi-tasking abilities.
In addition to responding to legal demands, Specialists also assist other teams at Microsoft in support of the company’s commitments to customer security and digital safety. These teams are engaged in the detection and prevention of child exploitation, cybercrime, business email compromise, and other enforcement efforts to protect our customers’ security and privacy. The role also involves regular engagement with law enforcement agencies, providing training on Microsoft’s policies and process.

Providing timely and accurate responses to legal demands from global law enforcement authorities consistent with Microsoft’s lawful access policies, customer commitments, and applicable laws
Management of sensitive legal escalations as part of a team of attorneys, product specialists and engineers
Participation in the LENS emergency response team on-call rotation, which provides 24/7 support for emergency law enforcement escalations
Engaging with government authorities to respond to process and policy questions, and to resolve legal document ambiguities
Improving operational efficiencies by contributing to policies and procedures, and by providing feedback to engineering teams responsible for LENS-specific tools
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
3+ yrs experience working in Law Enforcement Response and/or reviewing legal process in a tech company environment OR Bachelor’s degree and 1+ yrs of equivalent experience as listed
Desired Qualifications
Ability to maintain availability for scheduled 24/7 emergency response program rotation
Advanced analytical, research and writing capabilities; superior communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently, pragmatically, proactively, and efficiently on a wide variety of tasks in a fast-paced environment
Proficient in using Microsoft Office products and competent at finding solutions to routine technical issues
Detail-oriented and well-organized
Flexibility with multi-tasking functions in a dynamic environment and the ability to prioritize concurrent high-profile issues
Capable of accommodating fluctuations in work demands
Ability to understand a variety of technologies, business interests, and political and regulatory goals
Prior professional experience dealing with government demands and laws governing those demands such as the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) as well as criminal process and procedure, rules of evidence, and witness testimony
High level skills in legal analysis
CIPP/US privacy compliance certification, or the ability to obtain and maintain certification
Familiarity with the technology industry highly desirable
Ability to acquire and maintain a government security clearance if needed
