Microsoft has developed a sophisticated data platform to support monitoring and reporting on its environmental commitments. The Sustainability Measurement & Data Platform Program Manager will lead the business in evolving this platform, integrating new requirements and technologies and pursuing further automation across the platform. The role will also own and drive the cross-company environmental data collection and calculations effort which support the monitoring & reporting functions of the environmental sustainability team. Experience as a business owner working directly with engineering teams for tooling development is required.
This position requires extensive cross-group coordination at all levels of the company, strong sustainability subject matter expertise, robust business acumen, excellent communication skills, the ability to synthesize complex business problems and devise and execute on plans which address big challenges and opportunities in the environmental sustainability space.
Responsibilities
Data Platform:
Lead the sustainability data platform workstream to compute Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions using the Green House Gas (GHG) Protocol and report emissions, aligned with Microsoft’s Carbon Inventory Management Plan.
The technology platform ingests, stages, cleanses and normalizes a variety of emissions-related data from across the Microsoft enterprise, and also computes metrics associated with the Microsoft Waste program, in accordance with the waste management plan.
Requirements Gathering:
Extend the sustainability data platform through an ongoing effort to integrate new technologies, gather new requirements from stakeholders, and partner with the engineering product owner to prioritize these requirements in the platform development roadmap.
New requirements to be created also include data updates & restatements.
Data Collection:
Lead the Microsoft sustainability data collection effort in accordance with the five reporting principles:
Relevance: Ensure the data appropriately reflects the operations of the company services the decision-making needs of users – both internal and external to the company
Completeness: Account for and report on all activity data within the chosen inventory boundary. Disclose and justify any specific exclusions.
Consistency: Use consistent methodologies to allow for meaningful comparisons of emissions over time. Transparently document any changes to the data, inventory boundary, methods, or any other relevant factors.
Transparency: Address all relevant issues in a factual and coherent manner, based on a clear audit trail. Disclose any relevant assumptions and make appropriate references to the accounting and calculation methodologies and data sources used.
Accuracy: Ensure that the quantification of our environmental metrics is systematically accurate, and that uncertainties are reduced as far as practicable.
Measurement:
Leverage the combined strengths of the sustainability data platform and the data collection process to drive standardization, automate, and improve data quality. T
his includes partnering with stakeholders across the company to leverage new processes and technologies that can streamline the existing processes.
Sustainability Innovation:
Climate change is the greatest challenge that the world has ever faced, and creative solutions will be required. Think strategically to identify novel solutions to Microsoft’s sustainability challenges using strong analytical skills and technical knowledge to drive innovation across the company.
Development and adoption of creative solutions will require building strong relationships both inside and outside the company and bringing diverse perspectives to the table to find mutually beneficial solutions to today’s challenges and others we will encounter in the future.
Special Projects:
Drive high-impact cross-team projects as needed to meet the changing business environment and ensure the team is achieving commitments.
Successful project management, including work with strategy consultants and other external agencies, on strategic efforts that require hands-on experience across multiple functional disciplines and business organizations.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
8+ years of enterprise experience designing, deploying holistic reporting solutions; sustainability accounting experience, including GHG, SASB, GRI and TCFD standards preferred
8+ years of data tooling experience, preferably across the Azure stack (Azure, DevOps, R, Python, Power Platform)
Bachelor’s Degree AND 3+ years experience in corporate social responsibility, philanthropies, corporate affairs,
or related areaOR 5+ years experience in corporate social responsibility, philanthropies, corporate affairs, or related area.
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity or experience in any of the following fields is preferred: circular economy, sustainability target setting, carbon accounting, sustainable finance, ESG due diligence, climate scenario analysis, and / or ESG governance.
SASB FSA certification or similar preferred
Self-directed, motivated, creative, adaptable, unquestionable ethics and integrity, bias toward data-based decision making and a willingness to take calculated risks.
Understanding of global sustainability related policies, regulations, standards, and literature preferred
Analytical and strategic capabilities – synthesize data into problem statements, design project approach, gain alignment across teams, and drive initiatives through successful execution
7+ years experience in corporate social responsibility, philanthropies, corporate affairs, or related area.In-house counsel experience
3+ years experience managing a corporate social responsibility or related program.
3+ years experience working in or with a large, matrixed organization.
Excellent communication and presentation skills – clear & concise storytelling (both written and verbal)
Experience translating business needs into clear and concise business requirements
High energy and enthusiasm for innovation and continuous process improvements – Six Sigma training/certification and/or Project Management Professional (PMP) a plus
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, pro-actively managing tight deadlines in an organized manner, effectively managing competing priorities
Ability to communicate complex quantitative analysis in a clear, precise, and actionable manner.
Excellent business analysis experience from data sourcing to analysis to executive presentation of findings.
Ability to work in a time sensitive environment balancing complexity while driving strategic outcomes.
Firm sense of accountability and ownership and the highest standards of business, ethics, discretion, and confidentiality
Ability to meet Microsoft data security requirements are required for this role
