Research Optical Scientist Responsibilities:
Collaborate with cross-functional teams across multiple disciplines such as Optics, Displays, Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing.
Lead design, design validation and strategy development for next generation optical films and coatings for AR/VR.
Model design tolerances to guide engineering development.
Coordinate with external vendors to build and test prototypes.
Partner with cross functional teams focused on development of fabrication, metrology, processing and assembly requirements.
Root cause analysis of optical defects using optical simulation methods and reproducing defects experimentally.
Travel including internationally up to 10% of the time.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
PhD in the field of Physics, Materials or other optics-related fields with 6+ years of relevant experience.
Effective communication to translate complex ideas into digestible messages.
Fundamental knowledge of polarization and diffraction optics.
Understanding of different methods of how polarization and diffraction elements are made.
Experience and knowledge in building optical models in one or more of these tools: RCWA modeling, MATLAB, sequential and non-sequential (LightTools, Zemax) ray tracing, and LCD master.
Laboratory experience designing optical experiments and optical metrology.
Preferred Qualifications:
10+ years industry experience in optical design or optical technology development.
Experience in scaling, commercializing, shipping products for optical coatings and films.
Understanding of AR/VR lens optics and display optics (LCD and OLED).
Leadership experience in conferences, grants, fellowships, patents or other professional societies.
