What to Expect
Tesla’s Austin, Tx Die Shop is seeking a skilled and highly motivated CNC Machinist to join the team and contribute to our mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. The Die Shop Team produces high pressure die casting dies for use in Tesla’s production lines. We aim to advance the manufacture of EV castings through development of higher performance and more cost-effective dies. As a CNC Machinist you are responsible for machining the most complex components of the dies and working with engineers and NC programmers to improve die production and designs from a machining standpoint. You will be responsible for the setup and operation of machines as well as partial inspection and verification of workpieces. You will be responsible for monitoring machine and tool health and operation while in use. In addition, you work with engineers to push the boundaries of machining technologies and develop better methods, tools, and programming practices aimed at reducing die costs and lead times while improving final quality. The goals are lofty, the work is challenging and exciting. Leading by example comes naturally to you. Not only do you shine on your own, but you ensure that the rest of your team is hitting home runs too.

What You’ll Do
- Operate 5-axis CNC Mills in a low-volume / high-mix workflow •Read operator/process documents and perform setups and operations as described •Prove out programs on the floor with NC programmers •Provide feedback to engineers, other machinists and programmers on design and process improvement •Machine complex components to tight tolerances in various materials with tight deadlines •Use various inspection and measurement tools to validate your work •Tracking and documentation of machining processes and results when necessary •Work as a team by openly collaborating with engineers and fellow team members •Proactively communicate with engineers, management, and other team members through verbal, email, text, phone and other internal electronic communications •Maintain shop equipment as required •Maintain a clean and organized workspace •Participate in continuous improvement projects for the shop and Tesla •Perform all assignments in accordance with EH&S and security policies
What You’ll Bring
- 8+ years of CNC mill operating experience •4+ years of 5 axis CNC operating experience •Thorough knowledge and understanding of engineering drawings, documents and GD&T •Thorough knowledge in the use of measurement and inspection tools such as calipers, micrometers, gauge pins, bore gauges, optical comparator, etc. •Proficient with basic shop tools and machines (manual mill, engine lathe, drill press, bandsaw, belt sanders, hand tools etc.) •Positive energy and attitude, with a passion for prototyping and machining •Thrives in a fast paced, constantly evolving environment with tight deadlines •Excellent attention to detail •Excellent analytical and mathematical skills •Excellent mechanical aptitude •Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to develop and present technical information •Ability to work efficiently and effectively both independently and as a team with minimal supervision •Ability to remain positive and focused in demanding and stressful situations •Basic experience with common Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams) •Maintains a growth mindset •Flexible with ability to work overtime on short notice based on strategic needs of the company •Ability to lift 50 lbs. Desired Skills: •Experience with Heidenhain CNC controls •Experience machining dies (HP diecasting, stampings, injection molding ect.) •Lathe, Gundrill, Mill-Turn, EDM and/or large format CNC experience •Experience machining tool steels such as H13/ H11 •Machine maintenance
