Tesla is looking for an exceptional, highly motivated engineering leader with a strong technical background to lead our dry battery electrode manufacturing engineering team within the Tesla 4680 effort. You will be responsible for delivering never-before-seen manufacturing technology, and designing and deploying factories which produce higher throughput, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly battery cells. The ideal candidate will have a track record of significant achievements, tremendous drive, comfort delving into the unknown, and a willingness to roll up their sleeves.
What You’ll Do
Responsibilities:
Drive process development to take lab-scale electrode designs all the way to mass production scale
Drive equipment design & development to enable cost- and yield-efficient manufacturing
Drive metrology & control-systems development for high-speed in-line process feedback
Launch multiple manufacturing lines into production simultaneously across different sites / continents
Ramp production rates through yield, speed, uptime, efficiency improvements to hit our ambitious ramp plan
Work through engineering changes on production equipment while minimizing production down-time
Execute smooth production hand-overs with detailed knowledge transfer, and close collaboration
Strategically manage resources between technology development and production ramp
Define and drive a set of complex, interconnected, highly-technical programs through the minefield of challenges
Continue to build and grow the most capable battery electrode team in existence
Communicate progress effectively and escalate issues quickly and loudly
Engage the cross-functional teams to ensure all concerns are factored in to factory & process design
Build the most insanely awesome electrode factories
What You’ll Bring
Requirements:
Engineering degree or equivalent experience
Highly technical nature, bias to dive deep into the fundamentals
10 years related manufacturing experience, 3+ years management experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment
Preferably experience managing teams of 50+ individuals across multiple technical disciplines
Strong problem solving & technical development methodologies & ability to coach team on multiple methods thereof
Experience in one or more of the following
Powder handling & conveyance
Industrial chemistry
Batch or continuous mixing
Roll to roll processing
Calendering, pressing, rolling
High-speed hydraulicly-driven automation
Slitting
Inline metrology gauges & vision
Complex system controls
Materials science, structure-property relationships
Ability to work well under pressure, manage competing demands and meet tight deadlines
Excellent verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills, including executive level
