This is an opportunity to work in the Cell Qualification Test Equipment Design and R&D group, which is responsible for designing, building, deploying, and supporting test equipment for Tesla’s next-generation Li-ion battery cells and development of new cell test methods. This candidate’s primary role will be to work closely with design engineers to build concepts for the future as well as travel (up to 30%) to domestic and international Tesla sites to support the installation, commissioning, retrofit and maintenance of test equipment.
The ideal candidate will have a proven record of success in fabricating, building, and commissioning equipment, fixtures, automated test systems, with aptitude for robotics or electrical and mechanical equipment, which are all required to identify subtle issues that could impact safety, accuracy, uptime, and efficiency. What You’ll Do
- Interact with Design Engineering teams to prioritize and execute work requests
- Participate in test fixture design projects
- Communicate issues observed of designs, functionality, efficiency to project lead or manager
- Compile, organize and provide equipment build documentation to design engineers
- Provide solutions or alternative approaches to solve equipment design problems
- Fabricate and assemble components as needed for future and existing cell test equipment
- Work with lab managers at domestic and international sites to ensure utilities and infrastructure accommodate new equipment.
- Travel to domestic and international Tesla laboratories and factories as needed to install, commission and support equipment
- Support and train engineers and technicians on how to operate cell test equipment and to perform basic equipment upkeep and calibrations
- Monitor equipment and order spare parts
- Organize and maintain a world class lab environment
- Manage laboratory equipment, including daily verification, preventive maintenance, yearly calibration
- Conduct trainings occasionally on machine usage and safety, best practices
- Order tools and materials as required
- Repair or replace equipment as needed.
- Work with 3rd party vendors and suppliers on parts and services.
- Perform all assignments in collaboration and accordance with EHS, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
What You’ll Bring
Preferred: Associate degree with minimum 1 year experience in a lab R&D environment or a technical degree from a 4-year program
- Preferred: 3+ years of experience working hands-on in an engineering prototype, fabrication and/or machine shop environment with demonstrated mechanical and electrical skills
- Ability to read and interpret 2D drawings and 3D models of parts
- Experience with fabrication and assembly of fixtures and wiring
- Experience with standard electronics tools including DC meters, power supplies, oscilloscopes.
- Familiar with data acquisition systems and measurement tools is a plus
- Demonstrated success in the use and maintenance of shop equipment and tooling
- Able to work well, remain flexible and stay positive and solution oriented under pressure while managing competing demands, changing priorities and tight deadlines
- Able to own assignments and take full accountability for their success
- Work efficiently and productively in independent and team settings
- Communicate clearly using excellent written and verbal skills with attention to detail
- Experience with common MS office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Able to fully understand and comply with safety protocols for High Voltage, HAZMAT, HVAC
- Able to fully understand and always comply with LOTO safety practices.
- Able to fully understand safety hazards of working with electrical and mechanical testing of lithium-ion batteries
- Ability to lift 50 lbs
- Driver license
- Ability to travel internationally for business trips
