The Equipment Engineering Manager will manage a team of equipment engineers, test engineers, controls engineers, and electrical technicians responsible for supporting production of Tesla’s automotive and energy products in Service. The team will be directly responsible for the performance and continuous improvement of equipment for various vehicle powertrain lines and energy storage lines. The team drives improvements in overall equipment efficiency, product yield, cost, and cycle time through documented actions with clearly defined schedules and expected results. The Manager will not only lead by example but also performance manage the team where needed to generate the highest value from every employee while maintaining a high level of technical ability. You will work closely with the local manufacturing teams to strategically develop group plans and meet daily safety, quality, production, and cost targets.
The ideal candidate has a proven track record of building new teams, leading a cross-functional team of engineers and technicians, and managing complex large-scale production operations. In this role you will work closely with the department leaders to align on operating strategies, key point indicators, and project priorities to meet organizational goals. This is a cross-functional role that requires coordination between many different technical disciplines and teams within the company at Tesla.
Responsibilities
Manage a team of highly skilled engineers and technicians
Support day-to-day operations and be hands-on in problem solving, equipment troubleshooting, process development, and issue resolution
Support engineers in technical troubleshooting of equipment, including debugging PLC’s, reviewing code, reading electrical schematics, and other hands-on testing
Serve as a backup engineer for all members of the team both in order to ensure zero gaps in coverage as well as adequately address issues of escalating complexity
Collaborate with MFG engineering and controls teams to install and debug new equipment
Develop the team structure, training programs, and hiring plans
Define and be responsible for equipment engineering KPIs (OEE, Yield, Downtime, Maintenance Metrics etc.)
Define team priorities and coordinate activities to align with department needs and goals
Mentor team members and help them grow technically and professionally
Maintain a culture that prioritizes safety and quality through communication, action, and accountability
Empower the engineering team to collaborate with the operations team to improve product manufacturability and line productivity
Requirements
BS/MS or equivalent in science/engineering with prior experience in manufacturing; focus on equipment is required
Exemplary track record of high impact contributions both as an individual engineer and in a management capacity
Demonstrated experience leading discussions and resolving conflicts
Ability to collaborate with all levels of engineering and operations
Experience creating material and presenting to senior leadership
Experience with automation and controls engineering, including PLC, is preferred
Strong technical background in mechanical and/or electrical fundamentals
Experience with data analysis and basic statistics a plus
Experience with failure analysis and/or problem solving methodologies (such as 8D)
High proficiency in MS Office (especially Excel and PowerPoint)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work with multiple deadlines and constantly changing priorities
Comfortable with ambiguity and making decisions
