The candidate will work as a member of Tesla’s Quality Operations at GFTX to lead, support and advise on all materials level test activities with focuses on metallic materials and related joints. The position will be based in Austin, Texas within the Materials Test Lab.
What You’ll Do
Lead the test and performance evaluations of metallic materials in a wide variety of parts and components across all Tesla products. Assess risk within upcoming projects and ensure applicable materials tests are completed within demanding project timelines.
Development of new test and evaluation methods for assessing the use of various metals and joining methods.
Conduct failure analysis investigations in an extremely fast-paced, high-pressure environment. Interface with a broad spectrum of internal customers to drive concerns to a root cause and effective resolution.
Independently complete materials tests and issue reports for approval. Create and manage “Concerns” documentation to facilitate and trace corrective actions to a resolution.
Work with internal engineering teams and external suppliers to identify process-related failure modes, validation methodology.
Lead materials test technicians to support test setup, test execution, and interpret test results.
What You’ll Bring
M.S. or Ph.D. in Metallurgy, Materials Science with a focus on metallurgy, or similar. B.S. candidates with exceptional work experience will also be considered.
Minimum 5 years of experience preferred.
Exhibit a diverse knowledge of automotive metallic materials and their manufacturing techniques. Experiences in corrosion, electrochemistry, coatings, surface engineering, joining methods and other automotive materials are highly desired.
Extensive experience in operating a diverse range of materials testing equipment, including sampling preparation machines, UTS, optical and electronic microscopes, X-ray CT.
Broad understanding of failure modes in materials and joints along with experience of fractography.
Experience of working with hazardous materials with a willingness to exhibit and promote health and safety across the team.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills in order to establish effective working relationships.
Broad experience of working and leading cross functional teams to drive product and specification development and a demonstrated ability to influence the direction of design based on test results
Must be able to effectively handle multiple priorities, organize workload, meet deadlines and manage time independently.
